Meet the Coaches

Coach Lauren (Willis) Lawrence (Varsity) was a shooting guard for the University of Oklahoma Women's Basketball team from 2007-2011. During that time, the Sooners made back-to-back NCAA Final Four appearances in 2009 and 2010, NCAA Sweet 16 in 2007 and 2011, and won the Big 12 Title in 2007. Her senior class had the most career wins of any OU team in school history. After graduating, Coach Lawrence coached at Rockhurst University for two years, and is currently the head Varsity girls basketball coach at Shawnee Mission East High as well as an English teacher in the building. This will be her fifth year with the Lancers. She is from Overland Park Kansas, and graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High in 2007. The Lady Saints won the 2004 Kansas 6A State Championship, and placed second in 5A in 2006 and 2007. Her husband, Tyler, graduated from Shawnee Mission West and was a member of the 2008 University of Kansas Orange Bowl football team. They have one son, Addison (3-years-old), and one daughter, Kennedy (2-years-old).


Coach Drew Steffan (Varsity Assistant) is entering his fifth season as an assistant girls basketball coach at Shawnee Mission East High School, where he serves as a Special Education teacher.  Before coming to SME, he coached at Mission Valley High School in Mission Valley, KS serving as the Head Junior High Boys Basketball Coach, the Head High School Boys and Girls Track Coach and the Assistant High School Football Coach.  He also taught Junior High Special Education from 2011 to 2015 at Mission Valley.  From 2008-2011, he coached boys basketball at Victoria High School in Victoria, KS.  Drew attended Hays High School and played football, basketball and golf.  He graduated from Fort Hays State University with a Bachelor's degree in Health and Human Performance in 2011 and a Master's degree in Special Education in 2013.  He also played football for Fort Hays State. Coach Steffen also coaches football and track for the SM East Lancers. He is married to Dani, and they have two sons, Weston and Banks.​​

Coach Doug Archer (JV) Before coming to Shawnee Mission East, Coach Archer coached at Grand Forks Central High School in Grand Forks, ND. During his time at GFC he served as Assistant Varsity girls and boys basketball coach, Head C team girls and boys basketball coach, and Head JV baseball coach. He also taught Physical Education and Health while at GFC. Coach Archer played power forward for the University of North Dakota from 2008-2013. The Fighting Hawks won two Great West Tournament titles and earned three tournament bids during his time competing there. He graduated from UND in 2013 with his Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education. Coach Archer attended high school in Northwest Missouri where he was a 3-sport-athlete and lead the Jefferson Eagles to three straight Class 1A State Basketball Championships. His wife Maggie teaches PE and Health and coaches softball at SME for the Lancers. 

Coach Matt Jacobsen (Developmental) returns for his fifth season with the Lady Lancer basketball program.  Previously, he was the sophomore boys basketball coach at East for the 2014-2015 season.  He was also an assistant Football Coach at SME 2013-2017.  Prior to that, he was the assistant Football Coach at Bonner Springs High School for the 2011-2012 season.  He played football at the University of Central Missouri and at Butler Community College.  Coach Jacobsen is a graduate of Shawnee Mission Northwest High School and currently coaches football for the Cougars. He is married to his wife, Jenny, and they have a daughter that was born following the 2017-2018 season (Juniper).

Alex Henton (Freshman) is entering his second season with the girls basketball program at Shawnee Mission East. He has coached girls volleyball for seven seasons at Shawnee Mission East, two as a varsity assistant. After spending the last 5 years teaching at St. Charles Borromeo Academy, he is in his first year teaching P.E. at SME. He has spent his entire life in the Kansas City area, excluding the four years at Kansas State University. His wife, Kristina, works at Hallmark and the both of them continue to live in the Northland.
